"Prologue" from "The Sleeping Beauty" Concert Ballet Suite (Tchaikovsky-Pletnev)
Given the complexity of the first sections of the piece, I spent a long time fine-tuning details to play this section well. I made prudent judgements about parts of each section, and I was persistent in seeking effective results that would deliver a strong performance. I applied these skills in the slower section as well, where I focused on the balance and flow of the piece; this required continuous re-evaluation and adjustment.
Piano Sonata in B Minor, Opus 40 Number 2 (Movement 2) by Muzio Clementi
This piece required an integrated approach to delivering a performance that leveraged a diverse portfolio of music skills. For example, in the slow section, I had to think about how to create an interesting sequence of phrases and dynamics that would keep my audience engaged. However, in the fast section, I focused on maintaining coherency of notes and rhythms to ensure that the sub-sections would be clear.
Schubert Impromptu Opus 90 Number 4
In this piece, I exercised flexibility and orderliness in complex manners. I engaged in rigorous experimentation to find an effective way to play the soft and light notes in a clear and sparkling way. Given the complexity of the notes, I also made sure to emphasize orderliness in the sequencing of the notes to ensure clarity.
Chopin Etude Opus 10 Number 5
Given that I had some experience with recording, I used this opportunity to use different technology and push for quality. I exercised prudence in making judgements and persistency in seeking precise results. I tried out many different combinations of recording devices and times of day and carefully evaluated the pros and cons of each method. Doing these things allowed me to produce a recording with good audio and visual caliber.
Rachmaninoff Prelude in C Sharp Minor Opus 3 Number 2
Performing this piece involved heavy usage of the skill of being fair-minded in evaluation. As I prepared this piece, I consistently engaged in honest self-evaluation of my playing. This allowed me to make vast improvements and also helped me improve my self-learning skills. Although this recording represented the culmination of my reflection and evaluation skills, ultimately, the capabilities and abilities I developed carried forward into pieces I performed in the future and greatly advanced my development.
Bach Prelude in Fugue Number 5 in D Major, BWV 850
Filming this piece required creativity, flexibility, and a willingness to reconsider. Given that this was my first experience recording for a piano competition, I had to rigorously experiment with different aspects of recording such as lighting, angle, time of day, device, etc. In addition to being creative with my setup, there were many times when something would not work. As a result, I would often have to reconsider my strategy and setup, as my goal was to produce the best recording possible.
